Read write, and perform activities that stimulate the brain throughout life, allows to strengthen memory and preserve it, to reach old age with good cognitive health. In addition, and according to a recent study published by the specialized journal 'Neurology', it is important that this type of activity begins to be practiced since childhood.
The research, which was conducted in the United States, was attended by 294 people, who were evaluated through tests that measured thinking and memory each year, at an average age of 89 years, and answered a questionnaire in which they were asked about their habits regarding reading books, and whether they wrote or did activities that stimulated their mind during their childhood, adolescence, middle age, and nowadays.
People who performed mentally stimulating activities throughout their lives had a lower rate of deterioration of their memory
Researchers found that people who started early in this type of activity, and continued to do so throughout their life, had a lower rate of memory deterioration compared to those who did not.
According to the conclusions of the study, the mental activity it constituted almost 15% of the difference in cognitive deterioration, beyond what can be attributed to the presence of neurofibrillary plaques and tangles in the brain. In fact, it was observed that the rate of memory loss decreased by 32% in those people who maintained frequent mental activity at advanced ages.
