The Ursolic acid, a substance that contains the skin of apples, could contribute to burn calories and thus avoid the development of obesity. It is a natural substance that can be found in blueberries, plums, oregano or mint, among other plants, although in apple skin is where a greater amount of ursolic acid is concentrated.
In the United States, a group of researchers from the University of Iowa has conducted a study with mice in which they observed that the animals to which they supplied an ursolic acid supplement had a lower propensity to obesity and presented fewer signs of prediabetes and liver conditions than those who did not take the supplement, despite having been fed a high-fat diet.
Mice that received the ursolic acid supplement gained less weight and maintained glucose at levels considered normal
To carry out the research, the scientists fed the mice a high-fat diet for several weeks and then gave half of the animals an ursolic acid supplement. They were able to prove that the mice that received the supplement gained less weight and maintained the glucose at levels considered normal.
According to the researchers, thanks to ursolic acid increased muscle mass of animals and their brown fat -A fat that, unlike the harmful white fat that accumulates in the abdomen, becomes energy for the organism-, and decreased the risk of developing prediabetes, obesity and hepatic steatosis, a disease popularly known as fatty liver.
Brown fat is an adipose tissue that has the ability to burn calories and is lost during childhood. Recent studies have shown, however, that also in adulthood we maintain part of that brown fat, and that this could protect the body against an elevation of glucose and fat levels in the blood. Therefore, the authors of the work hope to conduct further studies to determine if ursolic acid is also capable of increasing brown fat deposits in humans and thereby obtain the same benefits that have been observed during the study with mice.
